Local knowledge
Built for desert heat and wind.
Summers over 100°F mean air conditioning runs hard for months, and an undersized circuit or panel shows it. Wind brings dust and outages, including planned shutoffs by Southern California Edison. And across the area, homes span every decade from the 1950s to brand-new builds on empty lots.
That’s the work: dedicated AC circuits, panels with room for EV chargers and solar, generators with proper transfer switches, and older homes brought up to date.
Sparks, smoke, a burning smell or a hot panel? Turn off the breaker or the main if you can do it safely, then call (323) 942-2199. If there’s fire or smoke, get everyone out and call 911. Stay clear of downed lines and call Southern California Edison.
Straight answers
Electrical questions, answered.
What should I do if I smell burning near an outlet or the panel?
Turn off the breaker for that circuit, or the main breaker, if you can do it safely, then call an electrician. If you see fire or smoke, get everyone out and call 911.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips to protect the wire when it carries too much current, when there’s a short, or when there’s a ground fault. If it trips again after one reset, stop resetting it and call an electrician.
Does a new air conditioner or mini-split need its own circuit?
Yes. Central AC and split-unit systems need a dedicated circuit sized to the equipment, plus a disconnect near the outdoor unit.
What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging?
Level 1 uses a regular 120-volt outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit and charges several times faster, which is what most owners install at home.
Where are GFCI outlets required?
Current California code calls for GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, laundry areas, outdoors, crawl spaces and unfinished basements, near sinks, and for certain appliances. The exact list depends on when the work is done.
How do I check an electrician’s license in California?
Use the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) license check at cslb.ca.gov. Search the license number and confirm the business name, that the license is active, and that it holds the C-10 Electrical classification.
